Open a server’s private page through a tunnel

Open a dashboard or admin page that only listens on the server, without opening a port to the internet.

A Termiyo tunnel forwards a port on your computer to a dashboard, admin page or database that only listens on the server, over the SSH connection, and Termiyo opens the page in its own browser. Use it when what you need listens only on the server and you do not want to open a port to the internet. While the tunnel listens, any program on your computer can use that port.

A dashboard, an admin page or a database that only listens on the server itself is out of reach from your computer. A tunnel brings it to a port here, over the SSH connection, and Termiyo opens it in its own browser.

Recorded in Termiyo against a test server and a small test web page, both on the recording machine.

Steps

  1. Make a tunnel

Open Port forwarding in the menu and press “New tunnel”. Give it a name, pick the server under “Through host”, a port to listen on here, and the “Destination” as the server sees it — for a page that only listens on the server, 127.0.0.1 and its port.

  2. Start it

Press “Start” on its row. The row says where it is listening; stop it again with “Stop”. A tunnel can also start by itself whenever you connect to that server.

  3. Open it in the browser

Press “Open ↗” on a running tunnel, and the page opens in Termiyo’s own browser, at the address on this computer.

Good to know

  • While a tunnel listens, any program on this computer can use that port, not only Termiyo.
  • Remote tunnels (the server reaches a port on this computer) and SOCKS proxies are made from the same dialog.
